Retaining wall construction in West Palm Beach FL - a wall that holds its ground

A slope washing out or soil creeping toward your patio? We build block walls with a solid base and drainage behind them.

Gray block retaining walls frame a wide outdoor staircase leading up to a planted yard and wooden fence.

Do I need a retaining wall, and what goes into building one?

Retaining wall construction in West Palm Beach means building a wall that holds a slope or raised ground in place, so soil stops washing toward your house, driveway or patio and the yard behind it stays level.

Most calls start with a slope that won't stay put. Soil slides onto the patio after rain, a planting bed keeps slumping, or an old timber wall is leaning out. Building a new wall means digging out, packing a level base, setting the block and filling behind it with packed soil and drain stone. If the wall frames a patio where you'd like an outdoor fireplace, it's easier to plan our fireplace installation work at the same time.

The price mostly turns on the wall's height and length, the material, how much digging or old wall has to come out, and how much drainage the site needs. The schedule turns on whether the wall needs a permit or an engineer first, and then on the size of the job. When I come out, the estimate I write explains what we'd do and why, so you can see where the money goes.

What holds a retaining wall up

Before we dig, it helps to know how a block wall actually works, because most of what keeps it standing ends up buried where you'll never see it.

  • How a block wall holds

A dry-stacked block wall, concrete units set without mortar, holds back the soil behind it and anything on the ground above mostly through its own weight.

  • Reinforcement for bigger walls

When a wall has more to hold, the block can be paired with layers of soil reinforcement that reach back into the fill, which adds width and weight to the wall.

  • The base and packed fill

How a wall performs depends heavily on the soil and on how well it's placed and packed behind and under the wall, so that's where we put our effort.

  • Block over timber

Concrete block generally resists cracking and holds up without the splintering or rot you get with treated timbers and railroad ties, and that's the main reason I'd pick block over wood.

Retaining wall questions we hear

How much does a retaining wall cost in West Palm Beach?

A retaining wall in West Palm Beach usually costs about $16 to $50 per square foot of wall face, depending on the material. That's the going rate around here, not our price. For poured concrete walls, one cost guide adds charges for stamped or decorative finishes, heavy demolition or digging, curved forms and walls over 3 feet tall. Your own figure comes from the written estimate after I've seen your slope.

Does a retaining wall under 4 feet tall need an engineer?

It can, because height is only part of the picture. One block maker's guide says plain block walls generally suit most everyday, non-critical uses under 4 feet high, but calls that a rule of thumb for the best case, so a shorter wall can still need a qualified soils engineer. The same guide says walls by water, such as lakefronts, seawalls and stormwater channels, need additional specialized engineering, so ask about your site early.

Why does a retaining wall need drainage behind it?

Water trapped in the soil behind a wall pushes on it, and crushed drain stone behind the block carries that groundwater away and keeps the pressure down. One maker's specification also calls for surface water to drain away rather than pool on top of the wall or at its toe, the ground along its base. When you compare quotes, check that the drain stone is included and ask how runoff is handled in both spots.

What causes a retaining wall to lean, and can it be fixed?

A leaning wall usually points to trouble behind or under it, in the base, the packed fill or water that can't get out, more than in the block you can see. Patching the face won't hold in that case, and rebuilding the wall on a proper base is the honest fix. If an older wall is still standing straight and only its joints or face are worn, masonry restoration may be all it needs.

How long does it take to build a block retaining wall?

Stacking the block is usually the quick part, since the concrete masonry trade group says an experienced crew of three or four typically builds 300 to 500 square feet of wall a day with mortarless block. Digging out, packing the base and placing drain stone take their share of the time, and any permit or engineering comes first. I'll go over what your schedule depends on when I come out.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in West Palm Beach?

It may, and the place to find out is the city's Building Division, which handles permits for construction projects in West Palm Beach. Applications go through the city's Civic Access portal, and the city's Research Tool checks a proposed project against the zoning code and gives an idea of which permits it will need. You can reach the division at 561.805.6700, and if it's still unclear for your wall, we check with them before work starts.
